The most common question from South African beginners is not how to buy — it is how much. Here is a rule that keeps you out of trouble.
The rule: only money you can lose
Bitcoin has dropped more than half in a matter of months, more than once. If a 50% drop would change your rent, your food, or your ability to pay debt, you are holding too much.
Start absurdly small
Many platforms in South Africa let you buy from around R50. Starting small is not a lack of ambition — it is how you practise the mechanics: depositing rand, buying, withdrawing to your own wallet, and keeping a record.
Emergency fund first, then Bitcoin
A cash buffer you can reach in a day matters more than any investment. Bitcoin is volatile and, if you self-custody, it is not something you can simply swipe at the till. Build the buffer first.
Write the number down before you buy
Decide your monthly amount once, in writing, and treat it as a fixed expense. Deciding in the moment is how people buy more at the top than at the bottom.
