Buying your first Bitcoin in South Africa is easier than most people think — but the how matters more than the when. Here’s the plain-language path.
1. Pick a local exchange
The two biggest SA platforms are Luno and Valr. Both are registered with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) and let you deposit rand via EFT. Valr often has lower trading fees; Luno is the most beginner-friendly.
2. Verify your ID
South African law requires KYC. You’ll upload your ID book/card and proof of address. Takes a day or two the first time.
3. Deposit rand & buy
Once verified, deposit ZAR (EFT is free on most platforms) and buy however much you want — even R100. You don’t need a whole coin.
4. Move it to your own wallet
Leaving Bitcoin on an exchange is like leaving cash at the shop. For real ownership, withdraw to a self-custody wallet. The course walks you through setting one up safely.
